Figure 11 Zoning between two servers with two HBAs and two quads of a DPM pair
.
DPM-storage zoning
A DPM-Storage back-end zone is used to give the DPM access to the back-end storage used to create
virtual disks managed by HP SVSP. A back-end path between the DPM and back-end storage consists
of a single DPM back-end initiator port and a single port on a back-end storage device controller.
The following rules must be applied when creating DPM-Storage zones:
Each DPM back-end initiator port is zoned to exactly one port from each controller on a back-end
storage device. This allows for back-end failover capabilities if a storage device port or the con-
troller fails.
Each DPM back-end initiator port is zoned to a different port on a given back-end storage device
controller. Zoning multiple DPM ports to a single storage device port leaves the configuration
vulnerable to a loss of availability if the storage port fails.
Each storage device port is zoned to exactly one back-end initiator port from each DPM. Zoning
to a port from each DPM allows for back-end failover capabilities if the active DPM fails or the
particular active back-end port fails.
Each zone has a maximum of four storage device ports. (This rule is necessary when zoning larger
arrays with more storage device ports and controllers such as the XP array.)
Using these rules, each zoned DPM back-end initiator port has exactly one back-end path to each
controller in a storage device. In the case of the HP EVA being the storage device, the dual-controller
configuration translates into two paths to the EVA through each DPM back-end initiator port. The
number of overall back-end paths is dependent on the number of ports on the storage device. For
example, an HP EVA4400 has two ports on each controller, which would equal four back-end paths
through each DPM, while the HP EVA8100 has four ports on each controller that would equal eight
paths through each DPM.
Figure 12 illustrates full zoning between a dual, dual-port controller back-end storage device and the
first quad of each DPM. Paths between DPM initiator ports and storage device target ports are color
coordinated to represent the different zones to which they belong within the red and blue fabrics.
