Deployment steps
Before actually configuring the environment it is very important to carefully plan the environment and
the deployment steps after taking all the requirements into consideration. The deployment steps include
configuring of all the storage components that provide storage services for the VMware environment:
• Fibre Channel zoning—Configure the appropriate SAN zoning.
• Storage systems—Configure the LUNs and LUN masking.
• VSM—Configure the storage pools: virtual disks and assigning the virtual disks to the VMware/ESX
servers.
• VMware ESX server—Configure the storage adapter and create the DATASTORE.
NOTE:
It is important that the components are configured in the specific order as described in the following
sections.
Supported VMware ESX versions
The following VMware ESX and Virtual Center versions are supported by the current VSM software
release:
• VMware ESX Server 3.5 update 2 or later
• VMware ESX Server 3.5 update 2 or later (both installable and embedded)
• VMware ESX vSphere 4 (ESX 4.0) , VMware ESX vSphere 4 (ESX 4.0) update 1 or later
• VMware ESX vSphere 4 (ESX 4.0) , VMware ESX vSphere 4 (ESX 4.0) update 1 or later (both
installable and embedded)
Supported VSM software versions
SVSP 2.0 or higher is required for proper interoperability with VMware ESX server.
Importing the VMware datastore
When you import a VMware datastore (VMFS formatted LU), you must do one of two things.
1. Allow snapshot LUNs
2. Resignature the LUN
This is required since, by default, VMware hides disks that it thinks are snapshots. VMware determines
the disk is a snapshot by comparing the UUID of the LUN with the disk signature. If the UUIDs do not
match, the LUN datastore is hidden as a “snapshot.”
The best method is to use option #2. Option #1 renames the datastore “Snapshot of xxxxx” and can
cause confusion.
To resignature the LUN:
1. Assign the imported LUN permissions to only one ESX server.
2. Enable the resignature option in the VMware advanced software settings.
3. Rescan the SAN. The datastore should be discovered and mounted automatically.
4. Disable the resignature option.
