4 Pair operations

This chapter provides procedures and information for performing ESAM pair operations.

Operations workflow

The following are Remote Web Console procedures, but these operations can also be performed

using RAID Manager. For more information, see “Supported RAID Manager commands” (page 33).

Checking pair status

Each ESAM operation requires a specific pair status. Before performing any operation, check pair

status. Also, check that the pair changes to the expected status when an operation completes.

• Find the status requirements for the operation in each section under Prerequisite information.

• To see a pair's status in the GUI, and for status definitions, see “Monitoring pair status ”

(page 36).

Creating pairs

A pair consists of primary and secondary volumes whose data is synchronized until the pair is

split. During the initial copy, the P-VOL remains available to the host for read/write.

You perform the following two operations when you create pairs:

1. The initial copy, in which the data is copied.

2. Verifying that the host recognizes both the P-VOL and S-VOL as a single volume. This is a key

ESAM component because it allows host write I/O to switch to the S-VOL without stopping in

the event of a failure.

Performing the initial copy

In this operation, you will create the ESAM pair.

Prerequisite information:

• All configuration tasks should be performed, as described in “Configuration operations”

(page 22).

• Review “Pair volume requirements ” (page 13).

• LDEVs for the primary and secondary volumes:

Must be created and formatted.◦

◦ Must have identical block counts.

◦ Must be in SMPL status.

• The S-VOL must be offline; the P-VOL can be online.

• Copy each volume's port number, host group number (GID), and LUN. This is needed during

the procedure.

• Copy the CU Free RCU from which you will assign the secondary volume. Copy the serial

number, LDKC number, controller ID, model name, path group ID, and the channel type.

• You will assign a quorum disk to the ESAM pairs during the initial copy procedure. The pairs

created between the same primary and secondary system must be assigned the same quorum

disk.
