Deliverable D4.3
Evaluation of Phase I Field Trial
TORRENT
IST-2000-25187 PUBLIC Page 61 of 77
6 Conclusions and Recommendations
The field trial for phase 1, namely MCLab trial, has been implemented according to [2].
Due to some project adjustments (departure of Versaware partner and migration to IPv6) the
testing plan described in [2] was not followed and the set of tests that were performed are
described in section 4.2 of this report.
The tests that were made on the developers (WP2 & WP3) labs are also described and presented
at the annex, section 7 of this deliverable.
MCLab trial had provided a controlled environment (laboratory/experimental environment) and
the first insight on the system functionalities, mainly the communication between the LAP and
the T-RG have been achieved, even if all the proposed tests and applications can’t be performed
due to first prototype integration.
In fact several problems have appeared and both H/W and S/W developers are working on in
order to solve it, one of them being the instability of the ADSL integration between RG and the
LAP and the other the integration of all software modules developed by different partners.
Nevertheless it should be kept in mind that TORRENT system is a prototype system and
consequently under specific performance aspects, TORRENT system could not perform so well
as commercial grade equipment.
A short summary containing the status of phase II field trials has been done. A more elaborated
report will be made [3].
In phase II the tests will be performed in an operator environment taking into account either
security aspects, access networks convergence, or communication to core networks through the
LAPs. One important aspect that is included in this report is the beginning of preparations for
IPv6 on all trial sites.
The implementations of TORRENT at network and application level can possibly take advantage
of the migration to IPv6.
Each trial exploitation plan is described. Despite some partners are still investigating the best way
to exploit in depth each trial, it can be noticed that the flexibility is expected to come from the
TORRENT concept in the perspective of: a) Offering a set of advantages to customer, by
providing interactivity between the system and the customer through the selection of most
appropriated network and the b) possibility of aggregation of access networks to core networks
according to rules established by the customer.
