Operating the Floppy Drive

Restoring Files from a Floppy Diskette to Your System

Use the following instructions to restore ﬁles from a ﬂoppy diskette to

your system:

1. Load the ﬂoppy diskette into the disk drive.

2. Type the following command in a terminal window at the prompt and

press Enter:

directory_path

This command changes you to the directory in which you want the

ﬁles to reside.

3. Enter the following command at the prompt and press Enter:

tar -xvf

devicefile pathname

where

devicefile

is the device ﬁle as listed in SAM (see the section

“Using Device Files” in this chapter) and

pathname

is the path name

of the ﬁle or directory containing ﬁles that you want to restore from

the diskette. If you do not specify

pathname

, everything on the ﬂoppy

diskette is restored.

Listing the Files on a Floppy Diskette

Use the following instructions to list the ﬁles on a ﬂoppy diskette:

1. Load the ﬂoppy diskette into the disk drive.

2. Enter the following command in a terminal window at the prompt

and press Enter:

tar -tvf

devicefile

where

devicefile

is the device ﬁle as listed by SAM. See the

section “Using Device Files” in this chapter. Note that this command

will list all ﬁles on the ﬂoppy diskette.
