GENERAL DISCUSSION
Jon Griebel passed around a circa 1998 video PCI card with with a DVI
connector that has both DVI and VGA capability. He pointed out that it had 4 pin
holes near the "tab" pin. The 4 additional pins allow for a DVI-to-VGA cable that
connects to a VGA monitor. Jon stated that many of the newer video cards that
are without the 4-pin holes are DVI only and will not connect to a VGA monitor.
Jon Griebel had a problem on HPs where the fan was not running, or was not up
to speed, and it flashed a quick message that you might miss. Jon also told of a
computer built without the standoff between the motherboard and case, and it ran
okay for two years before it finally shorted out. Danny Hollingsworth recently had
a motherboard where the capacitors were swelled up so it had to be thrown out.
Bill Burke said he had a Netopia DSL modem in Washington State that failed and
was told that they were all failing. His was six years old. Within two days, he had
another problem, since a tech had shorted out a wire at a box on the road.
