Expanding THP/Smart pools
Pool capacity can be increased by expanding THP/Smart pools or by converting THP pools into Smart
pools.
Expand a THP/Smart pool by adding volumes to it. Expand an existing THP pool by converting it into
an Smart pool, which changes the pool type and allows you to configure tiers that support a mix of
drive types and RAID levels.
Prerequisites
• Register the storage system.
• Verify the external connections for any storage system with multiple performance levels before
defining an external LDEV tier rank.
• Verify that when using XP24000/20000, HP XP P9500 Storage for THP pools:
• Parity groups from which volumes have already been created can be added
• Drive type characteristics (for example: drive type and drive speed) in parity groups and RAID
level
NOTE:
In Smart pools, if different drive types and/or RAID levels are mixed in a single tier, they will all be
considered equal for data placement regardless of page access frequency. As a result, I/O performance
will be dependent on the drive type characteristics and RAID level on which any given page resides.

1. On the Resources tab, expand the storage systems, select an THP pool on the target storage
system, and click Expand Pool.
2. To expand an THP pool:
1. In Additional Parity Groups, click Add Parity Groups.
2. Select one of more parity groups, click Add to Pool, and then click Close. The Pool Summary
is updated.
TIP:
To change an existing THP pool into an Smart pool, click Changes to an Smart pool.
